Small Animal Foster Care
Role Requirements
Occasionally, we need to send animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs to foster. Typically, this will be for medical reasons, such as monitoring symptoms or assisting in recovery from surgery. Fosters should have a deep sense of compassion and a desire to help both humans and animals. You will be expected to provide daily care for your foster pet, including giving medication as needed. The length of time for fostering depends on the reason the pet is being sent.

Responsibilities

Ensure your foster is provided with the best possible care

Ensure access to proper food, water, housing, exercise, and enrichment. We will provide all supplies such as food and enclosures.

Fosters must be kept inside your home; we do not allow for our smalls to stay in barns or hutches.

Fosters should be kept separate from resident pets at all times

Take photos and videos

Monitor behavior and physical condition

Participate in orientation/training as required for the role

Be able to transfer your foster to/from the shelter

Communicate with the foster coordinator
Physical Requirements

Ability to lift objects and animals up to 10 lbs

Ability to clean cages and change out litterboxes daily

Ability to manage any allergies you may have to hay
Emotional and Mental Requirements
Fostering is a rewarding way to support a pet in need, but it also comes with unique challenges. To ensure the best experience for both our animals and our foster families, we ask that foster families bring the following skills and qualities to their role.

Ability to maintain composure during challenging and/or emotionally charged situations

Ability to work with shelter staff and volunteers in an understanding and supportive manner.

Ability to remain positive and judgment-free in challenging situations
